Kicking it way back to 1938

Our History

From a humble start

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

In 1938, a single ski trail was cleared on the western slope of Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, Maine, by a collaborative of local students, Civilian Conservation Corps members, and volunteers. Three years later a rope tow was introduced, and the Pleasant Mountain Ski Club was born. Through the years, Pleasant Mountain become one of the premiere ski areas in Maine, eventually boasting the most night skiing in New England. In 1988, Pleasant Mountain was sold to Shawnee Mountain Corporation and, in a burst of brand synergy, was renamed “Shawnee Peak” to create a connection between the Maine mountain and the Pennsylvania company. And so it has been for 34 years that the western peak of the Pleasant Mountain massif has been named Shawnee Peak. Until 2022

The Rebirth of Pleasant Mountain

We are pleased to announce that for the 2022-23 ski season, Shawnee Peak will return to its roots and will be known once again as Pleasant Mountain. This decision was made to honor the 84-year history of the ski area, as well as the mountain it calls home.
